Visually Impaired voters can cast their vote in Haryana

Chandigarh , Aug 4: For visually impaired voters, who know how to read Braille script, the coming Assembly elections in Haryana will be a different one, as they will be able to cast their votes without taking the help of any assistant.

Disclosing this Chief Election Officer of Haryana Sajjan Singh said that the Electronic Voting Machines in all the polling stations will have stickers in Braille script pasted to enable the visually impaired voters to exercise their franchise themselves maintaining secrecy, a right given to them in the constitution.

Other such voters, who do not know Braille, can cast their vote with the help of an assistant. This is a new step taken by the EC in Haryana, Singh said.

In the recent general elections, though the facility of Braille script was not available on the EVMs but special ballot papers in Braille were printed.

Reviewing the progress in the work of electoral rolls, Singh asked the Deputy Commissioners to ensure that the electoral rolls had photos of all the voters.

He said that the Booth Level Officer (BLO) should thoroughly verify the eligibility of all the applicants before registering them as new voters.
