School for mentally disabled people to continue in Prayaas Building: Niwas

Chandigarh, Aug 11: UT Home Secretary Ram Niwas ordered for the school of mentally challenged children to be run from its present campus i.e. Prayaas Building, Sector 38, Chandigarh, on permanent basis.

The school has been functioning there for the last 11 years and is an extension of Government Institute for Mentally Retarded Children, Sector 32, Chandigarh.

Recently, the Administration had put forth the proposal of shifting both the schools (in Sector 38 and Sector 32) to the newly constructed Regional Institute for the Mentally Handicapped (RIMH) in Sector 31.

The parents approached the Home Secretary on Monday and made a representation to allow the school to continue from its present premises.

It was also mentioned that the move would defeat the basic aim of the Administration in facilitating such children as it would increase the dropout rate.Niwas also considered the request of parents for continuance of Samarth, a home for the mentally challenged, in the International Boys Hostel in Sector 15, Chandigarh, till the basic facilities and infrastructure is made available in the Sector–31 building.
